Oxenfurt University is the trading name of Oxenfurt Academy, a corporation established by Royal Charter and an exempt charity. The Academy was founded in 1583 to teach divinity, law and physic on the south bank of the Pontar, and for two and a half centuries its students took their degrees elsewhere. The charter of 1851 gave it the power to award its own, under the name Oxenfurt University; the corporation kept its old name, and still signs its contracts with it.

Today the University teaches 11,862 students in five faculties, from philosophy, which has been taught in the Chapter House on Ferry Lane since 1583, to the sciences on the Riverside site. It is governed by its Council and led by the Rector, a title it has kept since its foundation for the post other universities call vice-chancellor.
