Extensions and mitigating circumstances
If illness or other serious circumstances outside your control affect your work, tell us as soon as you can. There are two routes: an extension for coursework, and a mitigating circumstances claim for anything else.
Extensions
An extension gives you more time to submit coursework. Ask your department through the extension form (on the student intranet; sign-in required) before the deadline. Departments can grant up to seven days; longer extensions, of up to twenty-one days, are decided by the Mitigating Circumstances Panel.
You do not need evidence for a first request of up to three days in any term. For anything longer, please give evidence, such as a letter from a doctor or counsellor, or a statement from a member of staff who knows your circumstances.
Mitigating circumstances
A mitigating circumstances claim tells the board of examiners about something that affected your performance in an examination or assessment, or prevented you from taking it. If the claim is accepted, the board may let you take the assessment again as if for the first time, disregard a mark, or take your circumstances into account in your classification. It will not change a mark.
Circumstances the University usually accepts include serious illness or injury, the death or serious illness of someone close to you, a sudden worsening of a long-term condition, being a victim of crime, and serious financial or housing difficulty. It does not usually accept computer failure, travel problems other than cancellation of the Pontar Crossing, or several assessments falling close together.

Claims are confidential. They are seen by the Panel, which includes no one who teaches you, and by the Student Hub staff who process them.
