Academic regulations

The rules on credit, progression, classification and conduct that apply to every taught course. This page summarises them; the regulations themselves take precedence.

The regulations

The University’s academic regulations are made by Senate and revised each summer for the following year. The full text for 2026–27, with the course regulations for each degree, is (on the student intranet; sign-in required). Copies are available from the Student Hub.

Credit and progression

  • Each year of full-time undergraduate study is worth 120 credits; a taught masters degree is worth 180.
  • To progress to the next year, you must pass modules worth at least 100 credits and have marks of at least 30% in the rest, which may be compensated.
  • You may resit a failed module once, in August. The mark for a resit is capped at the pass mark unless the resit was granted for mitigating circumstances.

Degree classification

Undergraduate classification
ClassWeighted average
First class70% and above
Upper second class (2:1)60% to 69.9%
Lower second class (2:2)50% to 59.9%
Third class40% to 49.9%

For three-year degrees the second year counts for 40% and the final year for 60%. Students within 2 percentage points of a boundary are considered for the higher class if at least half of their final-year credit is in the higher class.

Academic misconduct

Plagiarism, collusion, fabricating data, using another person or an unauthorised tool to produce assessed work, and cheating in examinations are academic misconduct. Cases are investigated by your department’s academic conduct officer and, for serious or repeated cases, by the University Academic Conduct Panel. Penalties range from a warning to expulsion.

Attendance

You are expected to attend all timetabled teaching. Departments record attendance, and students who hold a student visa must also meet the attendance conditions described on the international students page.

Other policies

The Student Code of Conduct, the policy on recording lectures, and the dignity at study policy are also (on the student intranet; sign-in required).
